The Rise of eSports
eSports are growing at a staggering rate and by the end of next year it is predicted there will be 145 million ‘eSports enthusiasts’ worldwide. Perhaps a little more interestingly over 40% of these fans will not be ‘active players’ meaning that gaming is becoming a spectator sport in its own right.
The numbers also predict that by 2017 eSport spectators will rival the numbers seen by watchers of American Football.
This literally game-changing viewership has changed the way marketers look at gaming with the number of tournaments quadrupling in the last five years bringing in a predicted $1 billion a year by 2019.
Unlike traditional sports, athletes don’t compete within ‘one set of rules’. Instead they often battle it out in a variety of game modes in tournaments meaning different skills may be required depending on the challenge. The stereotype of lazy gamers is broken as gaming athletes still train to compete and are becoming famous for their ability.
