Alibaba Breaks Records by Selling Over $25bn Worth of Stuff in a Day

They made $25bn altogether, but Alibaba said they raked in almost $12 billion within the first two hours!

We’re familiar with Black Friday, but ‘Singles Day’ in China absolutely dwarfs it.

Singles Day is like an anti-valentine’s day that single people in China use to celebrate their freedom. It’s on Nov 11th every year, and this year 1.48 bn shoppers treated themselves online via Alibaba.

In fact, it was Alibaba that started this trend in the first place when they started doing special offers for the day in 2009.

They made $25bn altogether, but Alibaba said they raked in almost $12 billion within the first two hours!

But it’s not all celebrations, Greenpeace has described Singles Day as a “catastrophe for the environment”. In a report published last week, it estimated that total orders last year produced 52,400 tonnes of additional carbon dioxide, from things like increased manufacturing, packaging and shipping, and they say this year will generate about 160 000 tonnes of waste packaging.
