Amazon Has Pushed Out a Patent That Makes Drones Self-destruct in Emergencies

In what seems to be a counter-intuitive idea, Amazon have filed a patent for a “fragmentation controller” that will slowly dismantle the vehicle in mid-air if it is going to crash.

In what seems to be a counter-intuitive idea, Amazon have filed a patent for a “fragmentation controller” that will slowly dismantle the vehicle in mid-air if it is going to crash.  The idea being that if a drone is going to fall out of the sky, it might be better for it to do it in smaller pieces than one big one!  The clever bit is the on-board computer scans the local conditions and environment in order to determine over what areas it is best to dismantle itself in mid-air.

To put it another way – it can work out that it would be better to shed things off the aircraft over a lake or an open field than it would be over a school playground during break time!
