It may seem like a strange technology to develop until you appreciate the flexibility a snake has for accessing tight spaces. Outside of the laboratory these snakes have aided in earthquake disasters to scout for survivors and breached the sewers to search out blockages.

The lab also created an 11mm cross-sectional diameter snake robot for use in minimally invasive surgery.
