Deliverno. Has San Francisco Fallen Out of Love with Delivery Robots?

San Francisco Board of Supervisors has voted to severely restrict the use of autonomous delivery robots on its streets.

You may have seen pictures of delivery robots – machines that trundle along pavements, automatically dodging obstacles in their path. The hope is that they could be used for things like ordering takeaways – the robot would pitch up at your door, you’d put in a PIN, take your food and send the robot on its way.

But it seems that delivery robots are not on San Fran’s Christmas list this year. New regulations will mean that startups will have to get special permits to run their robots, and particular zones will be subject to strict guidelines.

  • The robots also have to be looked after by a human handler at all times
  • They won’t be allowed to go at more than 3 miles an hour, to make sure they don’t run into trouble, or run over people!
  • They need to emit a warning noise for pedestrians
  • They’ll need to observe right of way
  • They’ll need headlights
